Yoga Blocks
Lyengar yoga, named after the man who developed it, BKS Iyengar, has a heavy emphasis on the use of yoga props. This includes yoga blocks. Why would he place such an emphasis on yoga props? Well, ostensibly, he wanted to develop and teach a yoga system that would be easier for certain people to participate. That’s why things like aids are used to put the body into the appropriate positions, with a heavy emphasis on alignment within the body. But Iyengar yoga is not the only reason why a person might want to use yoga props, like yoga blocks, in their regular yoga system. That’s because these sorts of blocks are very helpful for a wide variety of people who are doing a wide number of yoga asanas.
Yoga blocks are usually three inches tall, or four inches tall. They can be stacked, as well as combined, so that makes them adjustable and more convenient. They also are made from different materials. You can find foam and cork blocks quite easily, and you might want to choose one or the other depending on what you use them for, how often you use them, and what your own comfort level is. Some places are even offering pure bamboo blocks. These are one hundred percent natural and organic, as well as one hundred percent biodegradable. They are also sturdy, solid, and come with rounded corners for maximum comfort. Foam blocks come in many different colors, so if more than one person in the household uses blocks, you can each get different colors and keep them easily separated.
