Yoga

Given how many people use yoga as a means to exercise and get fit, it is extremely easy to forget the real roots, causes, purpose, and function of yoga. Yoga, originally, was meant to be used with meditation in order to reach enlightenment. Yoga helped with meditation because yoga is all about making your body fit and flexible while your breathing remains strong and even. Meditation could last for hours, days, or weeks, but it could not go on if the body was not fully stable and in good physical condition. That means yoga is also about practicing discipline while channeling your energy and spirit towards the ultimate purpose of meditation. In this process, there are a lot of different things involved, including the idea of chakras and a number of concepts, definitions, and beliefs that fit in with the Hindu worldview. For example, for the Hindus God is everything and in everything, which means that even man is God.

There are many different types of yoga because there are many different traditions, many different focuses of meditation, many different beliefs, and many different teachers. The number of systems extended and branched out when the practice was brought from the eastern world to the western world. For example, power yoga was developed in order to emphasize the traditionally physical aspects—the asanas or postures—and remove the more spiritual chanting and meditation. As you research the various systems, you’ll begin to discover that the concept of yoga is very fluid, and it can be modified or evolved a lot of different directions by people who have long practiced it and are often teachers themselves.
