What is yoga? No doubt you’ve heard of yoga before, even if you’ve never practiced it, and due to the references in popular media like television, books, and movies, you probably have some idea that it involves stretching. Given the fact that yoga is mainly offered through the physical fitness departments in schools, the physical fitness departments in community centers, and gyms, you may think that yoga is nothing more than physical exercise. And for many people who participate in yoga, that is all it is. For other people—that is, everybody who doesn’t practice it in the west—yoga is a very important part of their religion. In fact, yoga is one path towards true enlightenment. Enlightenment is the perfect understanding of god, so clearly, yoga is a pretty big deal.
What is yoga to newcomers? Yoga can be the promise of many things. People who practice and teach yoga claim that it will put you in touch with your chakras, clean your body of toxins, bring you inner peace, and even heal diseases and injuries, or treat certain illnesses better than western medicine can. But what is yoga really? Is a series of stretching and breathing exercises. Stretching and breathing does feel good. It will tone your muscles, it will help you calm down, and it will help you relax in stressful situations. That is why people with anger problems are reminded to pause and take deep breaths. It is doubtful that yoga can truly fulfill all of the other expectations attached to it.
