Types Of Yoga

There are many different types of yoga because there are many different traditions, regions, and teachings about yoga and the mysticism and meditation that surrounds it. When yoga was brought to the western world, in many cases it was effectively secularized or westernized in order to remove the additional meditation and chanting aspects. Those types of yoga were further modified and modernized to better serve the hectic, stressful lifestyles that westerners often lead these days. Yoga is extremely flexible, with different holy men, gurus, and yogis developing their own systems from earlier systems and teaching those to their followers.

When people refer to the general term yoga they are actually referring to a system of yoga called hatha yoga. Hatha is from sun and moon, which means this type of yoga is really a study in opposites. Hatha yoga seeks to bring balance. There is also Kundalini yoga, which is yoga that is meant to focus on the chakras, or energy centers, in the body. Kundalini is an untapped energy source at the base of a spine, which is meant to be spread to the various chakras with postures and breaking exercises. Tantric yoga is a type of Kundalini yoga, because it too is focused on the energy that is spread to the chakras and throughout the body. There is also hot yoga, which is mainly hatha yoga postures done in a room that is one hundred degrees, to encourage sweating and flexibility. Those are the big ones that are generally taught in schools, community centers, and fitness centers.
