Tantric Yoga Exercises

Tantric yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on sexual energy and increasing intimacy, health, and sexual pleasure. Tantric yoga takes from the Kundalini yoga tradition, because it focuses on the energy from the chakras. Kundalini is the untapped energy that is said to be the base of your spine, and the various asanas and breathing exercises in Kundalini yoga is designed to unleash that energy and move it to your chakras. As a result, many positions that you would find in Kundalini yoga can be considered tantric if you share them with a partner. You want to channel all of that energy, but it doesn’t just have to mean through intercourse. In fact, it works just as well when both people are fully clothed. The key is to remain focused, remain in contact, and remain in eye contact with your partner. That is why tantric yoga exercises are considered some of the most intimate and sexually charged things you can do with a partner, and also why it is so popular in the yoga traditions as well as the western world.

To begin tantric yoga exercises, look to Hatha yoga--the sort of yoga that most people understand to be yoga. You should start with basic poses from that tradition, modified to prolong eye contact. For example, the downward facing dog pose is a good place to begin. You would start facing away from each other, so when you put your buttocks in the air, they’re touching, and you can see each other’s faces through your legs. Another possibility is the tree yoga pose, which is when you stand on one leg with your foot up touching your knee. You can do this face to face or hip to hip.
