Kundalini Yoga

People who practice a system of yoga called kundalini are trying to reach enlightenment by opening up the seven chakras. Kundalini is actually untapped energy that is found at the base of the spine. The system of yoga is designed to tap into the kundalini and then spread the energy through the seven chakras. When that energy reaches the crown chakra, enlightenment is achieved. Chakras are a fairly complicated concept, but they are usually understood to be vortexes of energy within the body. There are seven of them.
Because of that belief, the entire asana series for kundalini yoga focuses on postures that work in conjunction with specific breathing exercises to encourage the energy to travel up from the bottom of the baby. The sequences could consist of rapid, repetitive movements while holding the breath. A session will begin with a warm up that includes stretching the spine and improving flexibility. Each session will include meditation and chanting, as well as the asanas and the breathing exercises.

For many people, yoga is totally secular, especially in the western world. But Kundalini yoga is very intense in the spiritual sense, with the meditation and the chanting. If you want to just get a physical work out, you might not want to choose this type of yoga. On the other hand, it’s also very demanding physically. So for people who don’t mind the more spiritual aspects, or actually are seeking the spiritual aspects, then this might be a very good option for you.
