Iyengar Yoga
B.K.S. Iyengar developed the type of yoga that now bears his name. The focus of iyengar yoga is on props and aids in performing the different asanas or postures. Props and aids are things like straps, blocks, and belts. It emphasizes strength, flexibility, stamina, and balance, as well as concentration and meditation. It is meant to be a relief from the stresses and difficulties of the modern world. It is also highly interested in the proper alignment of the body, which will help unite the physical, mental, and emotional for the wellbeing of the person. The use of props is absolutely critical to this method of yoga, because Iyengar wanted to allow his students to take full advantage of a wide variety of asanas, or postures, that would not have been available to them as beginners. People who are not flexible or are ill will also benefit from iyengar yoga, because the emphasis on props like benches, blocks, straps, and even sand bags allows anybody to go into the next steps of yoga.
The iyengar yoga differs from other methods through three key ways—technique, sequence, and timing. The technique is the type of postures and breathing exercises used. The sequence is how one progresses from the postures to the breathing exercises. And the timing refers to how long a person stays in one posture, and how long the person takes to get to that posture. It takes a great deal of time to become stable in a certain position or asana, and so it takes time to reach it properly.
