Basic Yoga Poses
Basic yoga poses are actually postures, or asanas. Asana literally means the seat, which would imply that originally, asanas were all in sitting positions. They were developed as meditation techniques, because prolonged meditation required stable sitting positions that opened up the energy channels and allowed for easy, comfortable breathing. Over the centuries, the asanas have evolved, and now there are many different basic yoga poses that are practiced as both religious meditation and as a popular way to exercise and stretch the body and mind. If you are new to yoga, then you are probably seeking something you can do easily, or in the comfort of your own home. Though there are many classes available for yoga, it’s not necessarily something you need to learn in a classroom setting. You can find the information though countless books and websites.
There are twelve different categories for the basic yoga poses: seated yoga, twists, inversions, balancing poses, core strengthening poses, back bending poses, forward bending poses, side bending poses, hip bending poses, prone yoga poses, supine yoga poses, and standing yoga poses. Some of these poses will be doable by everybody, while other people might want to focus on the seated positions and some of the standing positions. Remember that everybody has to start somewhere, so if you need to start in a very basic pose, you will probably work up to more complicated, extended, and difficult poses. The asanas involve a range of movement, not just standing in the same position and the same place for several seconds. They also require you to focus on your breathing, following simple deep breathing techniques.
